Software Engineer resume example

Engineering managers read a software engineer resume for two things: whether your stack overlaps with theirs, and whether you shipped things that mattered. Lead with scope and measurable outcomes (latency, reliability, cost, users) rather than a list of tickets you closed.

Professional summary

Software Engineer summary examples

Two to four sentences under your name: who you are, your strongest evidence, and what you’re aiming for. Pick the one closest to your situation and make it yours.

  • Mid-level

Backend-leaning software engineer with 5 years building payment and data services in Go and TypeScript. Owns services end to end, from design review to on-call, and cares about fast, boring, well-tested systems.

  • Graduate

Computer science graduate with two internships shipping production features in React and Python. Built a course-scheduling app used by 3,000 students; comfortable with code review, CI and writing tests first.

  • Senior

Senior engineer with 10 years across distributed systems and developer tooling. Led the migration of a monolith to 14 services without downtime and mentors engineers through design reviews and incident retros.

How to write a software engineer resume

Name the stack in the bullet, not only in the skills list

“Built X in Go on Kubernetes” proves you’ve used the tools. A skills list only claims it, and interviewers will ask about anything you list.

Quantify with engineering metrics

Latency, error rate, uptime, deploy frequency, build time, cost and users all work. If you don’t have exact numbers, a defensible estimate (“roughly 30%”) beats none.

Link a GitHub or portfolio only if it’s current

Recruiters click the link. A profile with pinned, recent, readable projects helps; an empty one from 2019 hurts.

Early-career? Put projects above experience

A project with real users, a clear problem and a stack that matches the posting can carry more weight than an unrelated part-time job.

Check it before you apply

Run it through the ATS resume checker to see how applicant tracking software reads it, then tailor it to the job description for each application.
